EN: The Eastern Catholic Church is a small buiding in the South West of Sofia. While the larger and more famous Orthodox Churches are adorned with multiple mosaics, this discreet church features one single mosaic on the outside, in the niche just above the church entrance. The Virgin Mary is depicted holding the baby Christ, with both figures portrayed in soft and warm hues.
BG: Източнокатолическата църква е малка сграда в югозападната част на София. Докато по-големите и по-известни православни църкви са украсени с множество мозайки, тази скромна църква има една единствена мозайка отвън, в нишата точно над входа на църквата. EN: Hidden inside one of the court rooms of Sofia Court House is a monumental mosaic by Ivan Penkov from 1941. Especially designed for this building, the mosaic depicts the Greek goddess of justice Themis with her typical attributes of a blindfold and scales. The fortress in the background represents Bulgaria's Medieval history, while the golden hues accentuate the idea that the concept of justice is powerful and eternal.

EN: The early 20th century was a very prolific time for religious mosaic art in Bulgaria. The central facade of the Residence of the Holy Synod is adorned with a smalt mosaic which is both contemporary and similar to the ones decorating the St Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. This mosaic depicts bishops which were central to independent Bulgarian Orthodox Church, and the golden background reinforces the idea of sacrality.

The predominant red, green and blue tesserae are laid out in geometric patterns above the altar are reminiscent of ancient Serdica's mosaics, while enhancing the golden cross on the altar underneath.

EN: St Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is home to so many mosaics that we've split them into 4 distinct groups and posts. This post covers the ones in the dome above the Tsar's throne, which are probably the most famous ones in Sofia. The icon of the patron saint of the church is exquisitely detailed and expressive, and is surrounded by several animals and religious figures, all in vivid colour and detail. The cathedral is open every day from 7am to 7pm, and is an active place of worship with several services daily.

BG: В катедралата "Свети Александър Невски" има толкова много мозайки, че ги разделихме на 4 отделни групи и публикации. Тази публикация обхваща тези в купола над царския трон, които вероятно са най-известните в София. Иконата на светеца покровител на църквата е изящно детайлна и изразителна и е заобиколена от няколко животни и религиозни фигури, всички в ярки цветове и детайли. Катедралата е отворена всеки ден от 7 до 19 ч. и е активно място за поклонение с няколко служби дневно.

EN: At the entrance to Sofia Zoo, you will be met with a large colourful mosaic depicting some of the animals which are housed inside the zoo 🦒🦓. While we know the artist for this piece, Kiril Gorgov, the year in which it was created in unclear, but estimates put it at some time in the late 1980s. The warm natural colours fit perfectly with the theme, and the overgrowing vines add an extra element of nature to this mosaic's setting.

Макар да е известен художникът на тази творба - Кирил Горгов, годината на създаването ѝ не е ясна, но по приблизителни данни това е станало в края на 80-те години на миналия век. EN: In comparison to most of the modern mosaics we've listed around Sofia, the facade mosaic adorning the exterior of the National Electric Company is quite small. Also designed by Yordan Markov, this abstract mosaic was installed in 1976, but has unfortunately been damaged over the years, as you can see in some of these pictures.

EN: The facade of the Henry Ford School of Transportation is adorned with a large scale abstract mosaic by Yordan Markov. This building was previously the School of Engines and Thermotechnology, and the mosaic's concept and structure came from the study of fluid dynamics. With long horizontal bands transforming into diagonals and spiral shapes, this mosaic skillfully illustrates the theme of movement and is perfectly suited to the building's new purpose.

BG: Фасадата на Професионална гимназия по транспорт и енергетика „Хенри Форд“ е украсена с мащабна абстрактна мозайка на Йордан Марков. Преди това тази сграда е била Техникум по двигатели и топлотехника, а концепцията и структурата на мозайката са резултат от изучаването на динамиката на флуидите. С дълги хоризонтални ленти, преминаващи в диагонали и спираловидни форми, тази мозайка умело илюстрира темата за движението и е напълно подходяща за новото предназначение на сградата.

EN: Iliya Iliev created several monumental mosaics which decorate Sofia's administrative buildings, and the Ministry of Youth and Sports is another vibrant example of his work. The largest mosaic, in the entrance foyer, represents a circular staduim 🏟️ and is perfectly integrated into its surroundings, enhancing the space by integrating elements of the interior into the design. The second smaller mosaic in the adjacent foyer retains the same vivid blue tones, and uses perspective to create a seemingly endless seascape 🌊

BG: Илия Илиев създава няколко монументални мозайки, които украсяват административните сгради в София, а Министерството на младежта и спорта е друг ярък пример за неговото творчество. Най-голямата мозайка, във входното фоайе, представлява кръгъл стадион 🏟️ и е перфектно интегрирана в заобикалящата я среда, като подобрява пространството, интегрирайки елементи от интериора в дизайна. Втората по-малка мозайка в съседното фоайе запазва същите ярки сини тонове и използва перспективата, за да създаде привидно безкраен морски пейзаж 🌊.

The untitled mosaic by Elena Sokerova adorns the lobby of the building, and depicts a central figure along a strong diagonal line, with several carrier pigeons symbolising communications.

EN: As well as the "Peace" mosaics which we covered in a previous post, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Sofia boasts two other large contemporary mosaics from 1983. The mosaic in the Treaties Hall, designed by Bogdan Tomalevsky, is full of symbology, with vivid colours and references to tradition, prosperity and strength. The second, by Ivan Kozhuharov, also features bright colours , and depicts a ruler on his throne with horsemen to his side, and a group of messengers holding a scroll.

Мозайката в заседателната зала, проектирана от Богдан Томалевски, е изпълнена със символика, с ярки цветове и препратки към традицията, просперитета и силата. Втората, дело на Иван Кожухаров, също се отличава с ярки цветове , и изобразява владетел на трона си с конници отстрани и група пратеници, които държат свитък.

EN: The University of Forestry of Sofia is home to 2 contemporary mosaics, "Forest" from 1978, which can be found in the main building, and an absctract mosaic from 1994, which can be found in the Teaching and Laboratory building. Both artworks are by Yordan Markov, and were designed with their environment in mind, allowing them to complement the interiors while standing out and enriching them.

BG: В Лесотехническия университет в София се намират две съвременни мозайки: "Гора" от 1978 г., която се намира в основната сграда, и абстрактна мозайка от 1994 г., която се намира в сградата на учебно-лабораторния корпус. EN: The Monastery of the Holy Eucharist Sisters is home to the St John XXIII Church, which is decorated with a skillful mosaic portrait of Pope John XXIII. Designed in 2005 by Zdravko Kamenarov, this mosaic shows a great attention to detail, making it aesthetically closer to secular mosaics than other religious ones present in Sofia.

BG: Женският католически манастир „Сестри евхаристинки“ е мястото, където се намира църквата Свети Йоан XXIII, която е декорирана с прекрасен портрет на Папа Йоан XXIII във форма на мозайка. Дизайнът е от 2005 година и е дело на Здравко Каменаров. При тази мозайка се наблюдава голямо внимание към детайлите, което я прави естетически по-близка до светските мозайки, отколкото до другите религиозни и църковни мозайки в София.
