Regional History Museum Sofia

Mosaics from the Exedra of the Roman villa in present-day Filipovtsi district, Sofia

These mosaics are among the first in Bulgaria to have been extracted from their find spot with the help of professional conservators; they were transported in pieces and are currently part of the collection of the Regional History Museum, Sofia (Pillinger et al. 2016, No 69, 310 – 325; Попова 2010). The mosaics followed the layout of the exedra, which had a small fountain in the middle. The fragments on display at the museum are part of a larger, ornamental geometric composition. Their rich color palette and high-quality artisanship stand out, and they date between the middle and third quarter of the 4th century CE
